If you’d like to know more about our writing courses, read on …

Do you love words? Writing? Reading?
Do you wish you understood grammar? How to get your story started? How to revise your writing?
Do you aim to work with words, books, websites? To communicate through writing?
To be published?

So many paths to follow in Professional Writing & Editing!
Understand the publishing industry. Develop skills in writing and editing for business, magazines and newspapers, electronic media, children’s books, fiction, poetry, comedy, and more.

Most importantly, learn about new technologies, their effects on writing and publishing opportunities today, the ways in which you can learn to write for new media (or simply follow your passion and finish your novel).

Or use our course as a solid, supported and practical pathway into further education (we have a VU pathway into the Bachelor of Arts, for example).

Study full time, part-time or online in 2017.students
Or contact us now to find out more. We will also be offering a range of fiction and nonfiction electives, as well as core subjects, online.

Please note that intake is into the Certificate IV. We only accept applicants for the Diploma who have substantial experience in writing and/or publishing. 98% of our students study the Cert IV first, and then the Diploma.

Year 12 leavers should apply for a full-time place via VTAC. Other applicants wanting a full-time place can also apply through the VTAC site.

For those applying for part-time or a direct offer, our first step is to apply online through the VU website. We do interview applicants and you will need to send us a folio of your writing, or bring it to your interview. If you need further advice or assistance, please call us on 9919 2904. We’d be happy to make a time for you to come in and talk to us before you apply, or chat on the phone. We will be enrolling in January.

If you would like to apply for a full-time or part-time place, use the Online application system on the website at VU and include a statement of why you want to study our course –  as well as attach a folio of writing pieces.

We are taking applications from now to 10th February, but the sooner you apply, the better. Classes start 20 February 2017.

WRITING FOLIO – This folio should be 1000-2000 words (but not poetry, please). Fiction, nonfiction and scripts are welcome.  Attach to your online application as a document. (Alternatively, you can bring your folio to your selection interview.)

We welcome students of all ages! You may want to start with just one or two subjects. We can advise you at your interview, or by phone enquiry.

You may have noticed that a number of TAFEs are no longer offering Professional Writing and Editing – this is due to government cuts. Here at VU, we have an enduring commitment to our writing courses, and our pathways into HE strengthen this. You can study writing with us all the way to a PhD! Or simply follow your dreams and write that novel at long last.

We do suggest you apply as soon as you can as places do fill. All direct applications must be lodged through our application system.

We also offer a range of subjects online through our Collaborate system. These are often of interest to those who work or have family commitments, or who live outside Melbourne or interstate. Information on our online units is here.

If you cannot find what you need, please email us. Or phone 9919 2904.

How the course is structured:
For Certificate IV, you need to complete a number of units which are the core (compulsory) units – these cover the content of Editing 1, Industry Overview, Professional Skills, an Introductory Fiction unit and an Introductory Nonfiction unit. Then you add five elective units of your choice. This means a full-time student will be studying five subjects per semester. 22203VIC is the new Certificate IV course and it is a pre-requisite (or equivalent industry experience) for the Diploma.
For the Diploma, you need to complete seven compulsory subjects and competencies, plus a further six elective competencies. Please note that this is a new diploma course, which started in 2011. Most students enter at Certificate IV level, although some applicants with relevant industry experience may be eligible to enter straight into the Diploma. You may also be eligible for RPL of some subjects.

Full-time students will take two years to complete both the Certificate IV and Diploma. Part-time students will take longer, depending on how many subjects they study each year.

To qualify for entry into the course, applicants are required to have successfully completed an approved course of study at Year 12 level or equivalent, or be of mature age and assessed as being capable of successfully completing the course. Applicants must have a strong interest in and commitment to writing professionally.
